View the Batalha Monastery (UNESCO), an example of Manueline architecture, then travel to the quaint seaside town of Nazare and the charming medieval walled town of Obidos. (B) Day 5: Sunday, September 10, 2017 Lisbon – Madrid, Spain Depart Lisbon and cross the border into Spain. Enjoy your day viewing the countryside of Portugal and Spain before arriving into the capital city of Spain – Madrid. (B, D) Day 6: Monday, September 11, 2017 Madrid – Royal Palace – Toledo – Madrid During a locally guided tour of Madrid’s historic center, see the Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor, where events have been held since the 17th century. An expert-led tour of the monumental 18thcentury Royal Palace* reveals lavish halls, banquet rooms, the throne room, royal armory and the impressive courtyard. This afternoon travel to Toledo, a UNESCO site and the capital of medieval Spain until 1560. Later, transfer to Seville, considered Spain’s “cultural capital.” (B, D) Day 8: Wednesday, September 13, 2017 Seville Today you will see Columbus’ tomb, the ornate cathedral (UNESCO), and the Giralda Bell Tower. Enjoy a walking tour of the quaint old Santa Cruz Quarter with its bright flowers, white-washed buildings and winding streets; then continue to Plaza de España and the beautiful Maria Luisa Park, one of the loveliest in all of Europe. This evening, enjoy an authentic flamenco show (UNESCO) featuring Seville’s top performers. (B) Day 9: Thursday, September 14, 2017 Seville – Granada Travel along the peaceful Sierra Nevada to Granada, the last great capital of the Moors in Spain before it fell to the Catholic monarchs in 1492. Join a local expert for a tour of the world-famous Alhambra, the immense hilltop palace that is a UNESCO site. Also tour the Generalife, meaning “garden of the architect,” where the grounds are beautifully designed with waterfalls, courtyards and smaller secret gardens. (B, D) Day 10: Friday, September 15, 2017 Granada – Valencia Today you travel through Spain’s amazing landscape viewing rolling hills dotted with picturesque olive groves while en route to the Mediterranean coast. Arrive in the city of Valencia, a treasure trove of Roman and Arabic architecture, surrounded by citrus groves. (B) Day 11: Saturday, September 16, 2017 Valencia – Paella Experience – Valencia It’s your choice today! You may take a walking tour of historic Valencia to see the ornate 14th-century Serranos Tower and imposing 15th-century Quart Tower; then arrive at the bustling central market, one of the largest in Europe, where you’ll shop side by side with the locals before concluding your tour at the impressive 13th-century Gothic cathedral. Or, perhaps you would prefer to explore the impressive City of Arts & Science, an ultramodern, multifaceted educational institution, followed by a tour of the Lladro City of Porcelain to learn about the history and creative process of the world-famous, handmade Lladro figurines.** Later, gather together to travel to the area where paella cuisine originated. Day 1: Arrive San Francisco Bay Area

Today board your flight bound for the Bay Area to begin your

California Rail Discovery. Upon arrival meet your Tour Director and transfer to your hotel to begin a two night stay in one of the world’s most beautiful cities, San Francisco. Tonight enjoy a Welcome Dinner with your fellow travelers.

Day 2: San Francisco City Tour – San Francisco Bay Cruise

Today enjoy aSan Francisco City Tour to see the Civic Center area, Chinatown, Golden Gate Park, Union Square, Seal Rocks, Pier 39 and a stop at Vista Point for spectacular photos. Later experience a San Francisco Bay Cruise featuring views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Al- catraz & the city’s skyline. Enjoy the rest of the day at leisure in “The City by the Bay” which highlights fascinating museums, world-class cuisine & amazing shopping. Maybe browse the storefronts along Fisherman’s Wharf, sample a chowder filled sourdough bread bowl or take a Cable Car ride.

Day 3: San Francisco – Sausalito – Sacramento

Enjoy the morning at leisure in the great city of San Francisco. Maybe join a morning optional excursion to Muir Woods to see some of the oldest and the tallest Redwood trees in the world. This afternoon cross theGolden Gate Bridge to visit the picturesque city of Sausalito, where you can browse the numerous art galleries and shops. From Sausalito the views looking back at the San Francisco Bay Area are spectacular. This afternoon travel to Sacramento and visit Old Town Sacramento, the commercial hub of the Gold Rush Era is filled with shops, restaurants and entertainment venues yet retains 1800’s charm with original storefronts and wooden sidewalks. The Old Town visit includes admission to the California State Railroad Museum to see beautifully restored railroad cars and locomotives that illustrate rail history in California and the West. Later check into your hotel for a two-night stay.

Disembark your train in Truckee and board your motorcoach to drive to the spectacular year round resort area of Lake Tahoe to spend the next two evenings in the popular and revitalized South Lake Tahoe/Stateline area.

Day 6: Virginia City – Lake Tahoe Cruise

This morning travel through historic Carson City, capital of the Silver State of Nevada enroute to visitVirginia City, site of the Comstock Lode and once the richest place in the world.
